Mitchell R LaBorwit Honored With Big50 Award

N. Bethesda, Maryland – May 14, 2012 –Mitchell LaBorwit, of Cap City Home Remodeling / Green Monster World, has been selected by Remodeling magazine to join the Remodeling Big50. The Big50 awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Remodeling Leadership Conference in Baltimore, MD on May 11, 2012. The 2012 Big50 winners are featured in the May issue of Remodeling, a national trade publication read by more than 80,000 professional remodeling contractors.

Each year since 1986, the Remodeling Big50 inducts 50 owners of remodeling companies that have set exceptionally high standards for professionalism and integrity through exemplary business practices, craftsmanship, and impact in their community or the industry at large. Big50 remodelers run successful, often growing, companies of various sizes that have taken the lead in raising industry standards.

The Big50 selection process has become increasingly rigorous in recent years, and the result, Remodeling editors believe, is one of the strongest classes to date. All 2012 inductees “stood up to detailed examinations of their businesses and their books, and they all demonstrated an admirably deft ability to restructure, retrench, and flat-out hustle to remain viable in a challenging economic climate,” according to Remodeling.

“We are very honored to receive this distinction,” says Mitchell LaBorwit, Managing Member of Cap City. “The award recognizes excellence and leadership, and we are privileged to be named to this select group of remodelers.”

Remodeling editors, columnists, industry leaders, and the companies themselves make the nominations each year.  Following a lengthy evaluation and interview process, the editors select the 50 individuals who exemplify the best of the industry that year, and who have something to offer other remodelers in proven practices. Winners are selected in these categories: business savvy, fine design, industry impact, market wise, movers & shakers, niches, sales & marketing, and teamwork. Cap City was selected for the category of business savvy and niches.

Remodeling, published by Hanley Wood, LLC, is the leading publication in the home improvement industry. Designed to address the specific concerns of residential remodeling pros, the magazine is both a business tool and an industry leader for a market that reached $278 billion in 2011.

Clients Performing Serious Energy Retrofits on Old Maryland Homes

Lately it has been inspiring to see Green Monster clients in MD-DC-VA-PA etc who have gone ahead and executed pretty much all of the suggestions they were given to energize their homes. If you haven’t seen our bundle, it contains figures such as:

Where the best places would be to spend money on improving the home, with the goal of saving energy in a cost effective manner.

As an example, a client in SilverSpring, Maryland owns a home that is over 25 years old. It was suggested to him that insulating the attic, led smart system and installing a solar thermal system would be the best course of action in terms of saving energy. EnergyStar windows would be advisable as replacements for old, single pane, wood frame windows that were drafty.

The SilverSpring client insulated his attic to R-19+, replaced and solar-tinted several windows (EnergyStar) w a GMW hot water system .  At the follow up visit, he reported that the house bills have dropped by over 50%, and that the house is now quiet and comfortable. All of the insulation and air sealing he did will be paying for itself (and the cost of the water system) in under 5 years. Not to mention that the home is no longer wasting 40% of the electric it uses, or the 30%+ in Gov. rebates.

Throughout Maryland, there are homes such as the example above. Those homes are often in the ‘before’ condition, with poor insulation, old  inefficient water heaters and too much draft. It is our goal here at Green Monster to help people make their homes as energy efficient as they can be, AND to do so in the most cost effective manner possible. You CAN make your older home more efficient on a reasonable budget.

THE SUN RISES WITH SOLAR POWER

January 21st, 2012 by GMW No comments »

THE SUN RISES WITH SOLAR POWER

There are several ways to defray the overall costs. One is through state and federal solar energy rebates. A list of current
rebates is available through the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency. Another is by entering a net metering agreement with your utility company. When your system generates more power than you need, the excess returns to the electricity grid and your meter runs backward. This allows you to receive full retail credit for the power your system generates.  How
much you can potentially save on electricity depends upon many factors, including the size of the system you choose and your current retail electricity rate. We can help assess other ways to make your home more energy efficient, which is the best first step to take when switching to solar power. We tell people they really need to look at their home energy use, The more energy
efficient you make your home, the less equipment you need to put on your roof.”

If you’re purchasing your own solar panels, it’s best to hire a local solar contractor that specializes in solar power. The contractor will take into account many considerations, including how much energy your home uses and potential sites for the panels. The type of roof you have, which direction your home faces and even nearby trees and other shade-producing obstructions all
need to be factored in as well when designing a system.

Household electricity bills skyrocket

December 14th, 2011 by GMW No comments »

Household electricity bills skyrocket

Electric bills have skyrocketed in the last five years, a sharp reversal from a quarter-century when Americans enjoyed stable
power bills even as they used more electricity.

More electricity use at homes and higher prices are driving up power bills.

Households paid a record $1,619 on average for electricity in 2010, the fifth consecutive yearly increase above the inflation rate. The jump has added about $400 a year to what households pay for electricity. That’s the largest sustained increase since a run-up in electricity prices during the 1970s.  Electricity is consuming a greater share of Americans’ after-tax income than at any time since 1996 — about $2.50 of every $100 in income at a time when income growth has stagnated.  Greater electricity use at home and higher prices per kilowatt hour are both driving the higher costs, in roughly equal measure:

•Residential demand strongly increased last year to a record high. Air-conditioners and household appliances use less power than
ever. A new refrigerator consumes half the electricity as a similar one bought in 1990. But consumers have bigger houses, more air-conditioning and more electronics than before, outpacing gains in efficiency and conservation.

Prices are climbing, too, hitting a record 12.8 cents per residential kilowatt hour so far this year. The increase reflects higher fuel prices and the expense of replacing old power plants, including heavily polluting — but cheap to operate — coal plants that don’t meet federal clean air requirements.

Higher bills are a huge problem for low income families, which opposes a proposed rate hike. Utilities are what people’s
budgets start with.  The rate increase is needed to pay for replacing old power plants and making the transmission system more reliable. They reached a tentative agreement to raise rates 7.2% in February, lower than its original 17% request.

The industry as a whole is facing higher costs because we’re retiring our aging fleet of power plants.

The future of energy prices and the upcoming closure of more polluting coal plants make the long-term outlook cloudy for consumers. There are plans to ask for another rate hike next year to cover the costs of new natural gas-fired plants.

GREEN MONSTER SAVINGS- SOLAR HOT WATER PROVEN TO BE MOST COST EFFECTIVE

December 13th, 2011 by GMW No comments »

A lot of hot water heaters are 20 years old this year.  That is way past its expected life span so it is time to replace it before you have no hot water and/or a flood in the basement. An 80 gallon, electric model and its information plate says that it draws 209 volts and consumes 3275 to 4600 connected watts. So how much power does it consume?  How much power does the machine use keeping the hot water hot?

Estimating hot water use without a dedicated meter is tough stuff

A meter for the hot water heater can see what it really draws. Note that electric hot water is usually about 30% of total electric use and this 2351 kWh is 29.3% of this actual example.  Given the above here are some conclusions:

  • Hot water heater demand is about 2,351 kWh of electricity per year
  • At current electric rate- that is $324.15 per year in electricity
  • In the Average American example that is 3,172 kWh and $438.82 per year.

What you can do to save money?

Replace the water heater yes, but with what? Solar hot water with gas fired on-demand back-up? Solar  hot water with an electric tank back-up? A new electric tank? Gas fired on-demand tankless? An electric heat pump hot water tank?

There are lots of reasons to pick one over the other, here are four main criteria:

  1. Want a simple to operate and simple to maintain system – no change in lifestyle
  2. Want a quick payback on my investment
  3. Want to save money on operation so it needs to be efficient and at least Energy Star rated.
  4. Want to help save the planet by reducing my carbon footprint

To make that choice list go down – definitely no -gas fired appliances -tankless gas systems.

Solar Hot Water Heater w an electric backup tank –fits all 4 of the above- every time

Solar Powered New Homes Offer Big Savings Opportunity for Homebuyers

New Homes now are including solar power systems as standard in many area communities

Several homebuilders, announced that it is significantly expanding its popular solar initiative by making solar power systems a standard feature of homes. A new home can help homeowners reduce their monthly energy bills by as much as 80%
and lower their cost of homeownership for years to come.

The response to solar initiative has been overwhelmingly positive and is excited to expand our program so that many more homebuyers can take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Consumers who buy a new home get the value of a custom home-like experience plus the tremendous energy efficiency of the latest advanced building techniques. And now, having solar included is like having the sun help pay their energy bills. The response to their solar initiative has been overwhelmingly positive and excited to expand the program so that many more homebuyers can take advantage of this unique opportunity.

To illustrate the potential benefit of solar power systems and the many other energy-efficient features of its homes, Consumers with its Energy Performance Guideline, which shows an estimate of monthly energy costs for each home as designed. For example, a one-story, four bedroom home without a solar power system has an estimated monthly electric and gas bill of $308. With the expansion of solar power initiative, this home will now include a 3.50 Kwp system as a standard feature and the estimated monthly electric and gas bill will be $127. Compared to a typical resale home, this new home is estimated to save a homeowner about $2,600 annually on energy costs.

Green Monster technology delivers proven performance that can provide long-term significant savings. Gov. Grants, Tax rebates and solar energy tax credits (srec’s) as well.
